What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is the original natural medicine. In Britain, herbal medicine was the main form of medicine as recently as the 19th and early 20th Centuries. Its  popularity is increasing again and it is the most used complementary medicine in Britain today.
Modern herbal medicine is science-based medicine. It combines ancient traditional knowledge with the latest scientific findings.

The herbalist's approach

Herbalists undergo the similar training and the same diagnostic skills as doctors, but take a more holistic approach. This means they are more concerned to identify and treat the underlying causes of any disease than to treat the symptoms alone. They also focus on the individual person.
The aim of treatment is to promote healing and general health by restoring balance and harmony to the whole body.

Your first consultation

You can see me either in a clinic or in your own home. Your first session will take an hour. This is a most important meeting for your treatment. First we will build up a detailed history of the one or more problems that concern you.  Next, we consider how your lifestyle and any relevant previous illnesses may be affecting your present health
Any necessary physical examination is done.
I will then give and explain my diagnosis and suggest a herbal approach to treatment. Here discussion is important. I want to help you understand both the diagnosis and how the treatment will work.

Follow-up visits

Allow 30 minutes for each.
It is common to have a second visit after two weeks but then visits at monthly intervals are usual. A typical course of herbal treatment may require two to four visits.

Herbal medicines

Herbal prescriptions are designed specifically for each individual patient.
Your  treatment may be a liquid medicine (tincture), a plant juice, a cream, or a mixture of dried herbs to drink as a tea.
Your prescription may be modified at each visit as your condition improves. This is a normal part of herbal treatment, where your medicine is designed to match your body's improving condition and needs.
